This is a still frame from ABC's television show "Mad Men". It portrays a typical housewife of the 1950s. She stands in the kitchen, peering out the window as if to spy on the neighbors. The yellow gloves hang over the spout of the sink, indicating she had washed the dishes recently. Her hair and make up is done perfectly, she stands looking confident and poised, as the kitchen is her territory. The counter gleams in the sunlight, the sink sparkles as if it had just been watched. She has had a long day in the kitchen and has taken a relaxing moment to smoke her cigarette, a common practice in the time period. Her shirt and skirt match perfectly, she stands ready to greet her husband with a smile and make him a home cooked meal. Her hand rests on her waist, a watch around her wrist. She stands waiting to see something, hoping to see something through the distance and in the sunlight out the window. Her facial expression depicts a woman who does everything she is supposed to, stays home with her husband and cooks as well as cleans but actually lives a life of dread. She dreads her daily tasks and appears to want to be anywhere besides the kitchen. Her eyes long to be with the rest of the world, rather than among the neatly arranged cups that sit on the shelves above her right shoulder. The room around her is arranged perfectly, flawlessly, effortlessly. However, her face tells a story of pain. She is taking in the outside world, watching the neighbors. Spying was another role of the women of the family, seeing what was going on in the neighbors homes so when she met with her similarly-clad girlfriends she would be able to share the details of the exciting lives of the neighborhood.
Abby,
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting description. I liked how you took so much from one simple image. I never would have caught that she was spying on her neighbors or that she was experiencing any pain. Or maybe that's just because I'm not very good at reading emotions, who knows. I also liked how you started off with some great strong verbs such as "portrays", "peering", and "gleams". My only beef with your piece would have to be a few grammatical preferences (not necessarily errors). When you said, "She has had a long day in the kitchen and has taken a relaxing moment to smoke her cigarette, a common practice in the time period, " I feel you were being a little wordy. You could have gone with something like, "It was not her best day so the housewife decided to take a moment to relax and smoke her cigarette, a common practice during this time period." Your last sentence seemed a little long too and could have been cut into two. I think it would have been also good if you were to expand upon the whole spying thing. I found that interesting.
Overall though, it was a very good descriptive piece on this picture.
Abigail, this is a good description of the image. Be sure that when you include it in your research paper you explain how it is helping you prove your thesis. This might be too much summary for your paper.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I love the line: "rather than among the neatly arranged cups that sit on the shelves above her right shoulder."
